Vanderbilt University Medical Center was founded in 1874. In the decades since, VUMC has grown not only as a patient care, medical education and research enterprise on our 21st Avenue campus in Nashville, but as a robust health system – represented as “Vanderbilt Health” – with clinics and hospitals across Tennessee and into neighboring states.

Managing more than 2 million patient visits each year, Vanderbilt Health is one of the largest academic medical centers and health systems in the Southeast.

OUR HISTORY

We’re proud of our history, which includes (among other distinctions):

• 2 Nobel laureates, Earl Sutherland and Stanley Cohen, whose ground-breaking research continues to improve lives for those with diabetes, cancer, and other diseases.
   
• Early work that enabled mass production of vaccines for smallpox, typhus and yellow fever (Ernest Goodpasture). Today, VUMC researchers continue to lead the way in combatting infectious diseases, from developing COVID-19 vaccines to serving on national panels making public health decisions on a national and global scale.
   
• Creating the first neonatal intensive care unit in the country, setting the stage to save countless babies born too soon or with other life-threatening challenges (Mildred Stahlman).

We’re the largest private employer in Middle Tennessee, with more than 28,000 employees and an expanding footprint in towns and communities across the region. We train more than 1,000 resident physicians every year.
