U.S. News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as the best pediatric hospital in the Tampa Bay region in its 2022-2023 rankings. Johns Hopkins All Children’s ranked nationally in four specialty areas, led by the neurology and neurosurgery program, which achieved the hospital’s highest ranking ever.

The magazine’s 16th annual children’s hospital ranking lists Johns Hopkins All Children’s among the top 50 nationally in these areas:

• Neurology and Neurosurgery #18
• Diabetes and Endocrinology #34 (tie)
• Nephrology #34
• Orthopaedics #50

U.S. News & World Report compiles its rankings by gathering data from more than 100 children’s medical centers throughout the country, considering certifications from organizations such as the nursing Magnet program and surveying pediatric specialists.

The neurology and neurosurgery programs built upon past success by adding pediatric neurosurgery division chief Matthew Smyth, M.D., and hiring Theodore Spinks, M.D., to start a neurosurgery program at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers. The #18 ranking is up seven spots over the previous year and marks the first time a Johns Hopkins All Children’s program has been in the top 20 nationally. The program has ranked five of the past six years and is the highest ranked in pediatric neurology and neurosurgery in Florida.

The endocrinology and diabetes program ranks for the third year in a row. It provides acute care for hospitalized children as well as diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for children, teens and young adults with endocrine and diabetes disorders at seven locations throughout the Tampa Bay region. 

Nephrology achieved its highest ranking ever and is listed for the fourth time in five years. It is the only ranked pediatric nephrology program in the state. The University of South Florida (USF) Pediatric Nephrologists oversee all care for the general nephrology patients’ dialysis and renal transplant patients. The program provides comprehensive medical care for children with acute and chronic diseases of the kidney system, including congenital malformations of the kidney, polycystic kidney disease, chronic renal insufficiency, acute renal failure, hypertension, electrolyte disorders and other problems.

The orthopaedics program is a collaboration with Children’s Orthopaedic and Scoliosis Surgery Associates. It specializes in the care of orthopaedic conditions, including scoliosis and limb deformity; congenital anomalies such as clubfoot and hip dysplasia; problems of the hand, foot and knee; and acute injuries such as sports injuries, fractures and trauma. It has ranked six of the past seven years and seven times overall.

In state rankings, Johns Hopkins All Children’s placed fourth. U.S. News & World Report also produced a regional ranking with Johns Hopkins All Children’s tied at #11 in the Southeast region, which stretches north to Tennessee and North Carolina and west to Arkansas and Louisiana. State and regional rankings are based on the number of pediatric specialties the hospital ranks for nationally.

More than 100 pediatric hospitals across the country participate in the survey each year, including Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, which ranked nationally in 10 specialty areas. Since joining the Johns Hopkins Health System in 2011, specialists at All Children’s have collaborated with colleagues in Baltimore on a variety of treatment and research initiatives.
